Cosham PO6 – Vauxhall Movano Stuck Ignition Barrel Repair And 2 Keys

Master Auto Locksmith arrived at a local Vauxhall Movano van, in Cosham, Portsmouth PO6, working for a couple of really decent lads running a small gardening business. The intention was to provide a spare key due to their only key being broken, but matters soon escalated.

PO6 Auto Locksmith – Van With Seized Ignition Barrel & Door Locks

Initially commissioned to provide a spare van key to solve van access issues, we arrived to Cosham PO6. The Vauxhall Movano van was locked, the buttons on the only key were broken off the circuit board and unable to activate the central locking, and the passenger door lock was non-operative – as was the rear door lock. All locks seized and no working key. All the best things – all at once!

So the job escalated to a gain entry and program new keys scenario

The first task was to gain entry.
Options available:

• Pick the door lock. I couldn’t do that quickly, because the pick was turning in the lock, a fully seized or failed lock.
• Drill out the door lock and gain entry passenger side – again not a quick task
• Gain entry with rods. The probability was that the internal door release handles were double locked.
• Get the unlock button working on the remote in some way

Option 3 worked out to be the quickest way forward, albeit a temporary measure. I disassembled the key, took out the circuit board, held the battery to the back of the circuit board to give power, and bridged a piece of wire across the solder terminals, where the missing unlock button should be.

The vehicle unlocked via central locking activation from the key. First task complete.

The second task – as I thought, was to cut a key and then program it to the vehicle. Once again, this escalated.

Since the existing key was heavily worn and sloppy and notchy in the ignition barrel, it made sense to make a key copy instead of a new key to the original key profile. New keys cut to the original key number in worn locks can be notchy or not work at all. So in other words I had to cut another ‘worn key’, matching the original key profile. This was carried out successfully and both new and original keys operated the ignition barrel. However I was not happy with the feel of either keys in the barrel and advised the customer to replace the barrel, which they decided to go ahead with.

The Movano ignition barrel was quickly replaced since I had one in stock with me.

Now to get a couple of remotes working with the van ignition and complete the job.

Pre Key Programming – Diagnostic Scan

I always carry out an OBD diagnostic before carrying out any key programming work on may vehicles, including Renault vans (The Vauxhall Movano is a re-badged Renault Master), which requires ignition on, engine off a few times. I scanned and saved it as a PDF. Then I cycled the ignition, cleared the DTC codes and then scanned again, requiring another ignition key cycle. The van was clear for key programming.

2 keys were prepared for the van, and I used a key programmer which is specifically strong with Renault vans. I read the immobiliser pin, with the scan tool programmer, which is required for key programming. Both new van keys were cycled in without issue.

The new ignition barrel and 2 keys were fully tested, starting the van and operating the central locking.

The customer was advised to get new, working door locks installed onto the vehicle.
