A Jaguar XJ customer called asking for a replacement ignition barrel for his 2008 car. It was fairly urgent with the car stranded in Portsmouth PO1, in Hampshire. Upon arrival, the key wouldn’t turn in the ignition and I initially agreed with the customer’s diagnosis and began to remove the ignition barrel ready for replacement. This Jaguar XJ had a dash mounted ignition, not the expected column mounted ignition lock and barrel arrangement. This required removal of part of the dash to access the assembly.

Once the dash panels were off giving some access, I removed the ignition switch from the back of the ignition barrel. I then tested the key again in the Jaguar’s ignition barrel. This worked fine and was not resistant, as I expected. Inspection of the ignition switch revealed the issue. The ignition switch’s rotational movement had broken down internally, creating an obstruction which inhibited the key from turning in the barrel.
A replacement ignition switch was sourced for the Jaguar XJ and was fitted to the car. The car started up straight away and the key in ignition operation was free and smooth.
