Replacement Mini Keys in PO1 Portsmouth

A call was received for replacement mini keys in PO1 Portsmouth. The existing key had stopped working in the mini’s key slot, but would operate the central locking. Quite often, this kind of fault is down to a failed transponder in the key. But not on this occasion.

Testing the Mini 1 Key Slot

The mini key would not work correctly in the key slot mechanism. A change of key slot module didn’t solve the problem.

The ECU was removed in order to read the ISN number, which is required for programming a new key on the mini 1 – Cas 3 immobiliser. Upon attempting to program a key in, it became apparent that the issue was with the CAS3 immobiliser module itself. The vehicle had been jump started by the RAC due to a flat battery. This can cause a CAS3 data corruption, if the battery is jumped from a very low charge. This was the case here.

Accessing the Mini 1 CAS3 Immo Module

Next, the Mini 1 dashboard had to be removed in order to access the CAS 3 module. This is not a job for the faint hearted and takes quite some time.

Programming Original As-Built Data to The Cas 3 Module

In order to program a key into this Mini 1, the original immo data needs to be written to the CAS 3 module. This will replace the corrupted data, caused by the jump start. This was successfully carried out on the workshop bench. We now have a CAS3 module with factory data on it, matching the vehicle.

Programming 2 New Keys into 2012 The Mini 1

2 replacement Keys were programmed to the Mini 1 CAS module. The ECU and CAS3 were installed back into the vehicle and tested with the new Mini keys. The vehicle started. The Dashboard was put back. The PO1 Mini 1 was on the road again with replacement keys and a repaired immobiliser module.
