Portchester PO16 – Citroen C1 Ignition Barrel and New Car Key
Master Auto Locksmith arrived at a 2008 Citroen C1, in Portchester PO16. It was an evening call out to a car had been recovered by the RAC to a local garage. The C1 was turning over but would not start. The second issue was that the ignition barrel was very hard to turn and was about to seize. There was a third issue, in that the one and only original Citroen car key was on it’s last legs and was about to fall apart. This was probably cause by the awkward operation of the ignition barrel, which meant a lot of force had to be used to turn the key in the ignition.

To summarise the work ahead:
- Citroen C1 Ignition Barrel Replacement
- Make replacement keys for the Citroen C1
- Solve the starting issue
The job was urgent and I had to work quickly, because the Citroen C1 was in the way and on double yellow lines. The local parking wardens were understanding, but made it clear the vehicle had to be cleared fairly soon.
Citroen C1 Ignition Barrel Replaced

The ignition barrel was replaced on this Citroen C1
Initially the Citroen C1 ignition barrel and ignition lock housing were removed, and replaced. This was done first before it completely failed, to avoid escalation of the situation. The new ignition barrel had a new key number, or profile, different to the door locks. Two keys were arranged for the customer, using the original transponder out of the old key, and cloning a new transponder for a spare key. A new key was cut, copied from the new Citroen C1 key supplied with the ignition barrel. The customer had 2 keys to start the vehicle.
Original Citroen C1 Key Cloned to Make a Spare Key
The original key blade was duplicated, minus a transponder, to operate the door locks. This was placed into a strong key head. The customer now had 2 keys for the ignition and 2 keys for the door lock.

Citroen C1 Key Reader/Receiver Replacement
Next was to address the starting issue on the Citroen C1. I suspected that key reader/receiver was faulty. These fit around the ignition barrel. Upon testing the signal, it seemed to work fine. However, when I touched the wiring to the unit, it stopped working. This indicated a lose connection. The lose connection was identified and temporarily repaired, allowing the vehicle to start. At this point the customer drove the car home. I sourced a replacement key reader and visited the customer within 2 days to fit the replacement Citroen C1 key reader.
Upon completion of the work, the car started consistently without issue, and the customer had 2 sets of keys, to operate the ignition and door locks. The customer was also advised to get a full service on the vehicle, because it was lazy to fire and needed an oil change/top up.
