VW Ignition Barrel Repair in PO4 Southsea – Ignition Won’t Turn and Crank on a VW Up
VAG Group/VW Ignition Barrel and Ignition Lock Repairs in Portsmouth PO4
Master Auto Locksmith visited a recent callout from a customer with a VW Up in Southsea, PO4. He was unable to turn his key in the ignition to start the vehicle. The two common causes of these symptoms are:
- Failure of the VAG VW ignition barrel itself. This is caused by heavily worn internal components.
- Failure of the VAG VW steering lock within the ignition housing, which the ignition barrel is fitted to. This is caused by broken components within the steering lock mechanism.
Visiting the vehicle, the ignition housing was removed from the VW UP. This required removal of the plastic steering column surround. The fixings in this case were a selection of T5 torx bolts. Next, electrical connectors are released from the ignition barrel and ignition switch. Then the two the sheer bolts needed to be removed which secure the ignition-lock housing into position. This requires quite a bit of brute force, so it is important to be careful not to damage any of the surrounding components or plastic, or the instrument cluster. Once the steering lock bolts are removed, the ignition lock-housing can be dropped out towards the footwell.
The next step was to get the removed ignition barrel and housing onto a bench and install it into a new VAG steering lock housing. The part number of the customer’s steering lock housing was AM60HP, which is the same steering lock and ignition housing used in some of the VW T5 Transporters. The customer’s ignition barrel was installed into a matching, new steering lock housing. The ignition barrel worked fine, so the diagnosis in this case was a failed steering lock mechanism. The VW Up ignition barrel, itself was fine.
The new ignition housing was installed into the ignition, complete with the original ignition barrel. The ignition electrical connectors were connected up to the ignition switch and the ignition barrel. Everything was double checked and the key turned in the ignition, starting the vehicle successfully.
The plastic trim was put back around the ignition, and the customer was able to use his car again.
VAG group cars (VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda) often experience ignition barrel and ignition lock & barrel failures. It is important to act as soon as the key becomes awkward to turn in the ignition. Once the key won’t turn in the ignition at all, or becomes stuck in the ignition, it becomes a much more involved repair which costs more money. Acting soon will save you pennies.
